What a mental age quiz measures
Your mental age here is a playful read on how your habits and attitudes line up with different stages of life. Do you still jump in puddles, stay up until three watching videos, compare mattress prices for fun or fall asleep in your armchair at eight? Each of those says something about your everyday style, and none of them is better than another.
The result is not about intelligence, maturity in a serious sense or how well you are doing in life. A 30-year-old with a mental age of 12 may simply be wonderfully playful; a teenager with a mental age of 60 may just love early nights and a good crossword. Think of it as a personality snapshot with a birthday attached.
Where the idea of mental age comes from
The phrase goes back to the early 1900s. In 1905 the French psychologists Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon published a scale of school-style tasks to identify children who needed extra help, and the idea of comparing a child's performance with what was typical at each age became known as mental age.
Psychologists have long since moved on from using mental age for adults, and modern ability tests work very differently. Online, the phrase took on a new life as a fun way to ask whether you feel younger or older than your real age. This quiz belongs firmly to that second, light-hearted tradition and makes no claim to measure ability.
How the scoring works
Every question has four answers. One is the playful kid's choice, one the young adult's, one the busy grown-up's and one the wise elder's, in a shuffled order. Each answer earns between zero and three points, and your total is turned into a score from 0 to 100 and then into an age from 8 to 80.
Before launch we scored many thousands of random answer sets and tuned the age scale so that each of the seven bands comes up at a similar rate and none takes more than a quarter of results. That way a result of 12 or 70 means your answers really did lean that way, rather than the quiz pushing everyone towards the middle.

FAQ
Is this mental age test accurate?
It is just for fun and not a psychological assessment. It reflects the habits and preferences you chose today, so take it as a playful snapshot, not a measurement of intelligence, maturity or health.
What is a normal mental age?
There is no normal mental age in this quiz. Every band from 8 to 80 is common, and a mental age that differs from your real age simply means your everyday style leans younger or older. Neither is better.
What is my mental age if I am an adult?
Anything from 8 to 80. Plenty of adults land in the Kid at Heart band, and plenty of young people land with the Wise Elders. Your real age is not used in the scoring at all.
Can kids take the mental age quiz?
The quiz is written for ages 13 and up. The questions are clean and friendly, but younger children should take it with a parent or guardian.
Why is my mental age so different from my real age?
Because the quiz looks at habits like naps, parties, money and music, not your birthday. If you love early nights you will score older; if you love puddles and snacks you will score younger.
Is it free and private?
Yes. No sign-up and no email. Your answers are scored in your browser, and only your result code goes into the share link.
Just for fun — not a psychological assessment. Your real age is not used in the scoring. Written for ages 13 and up.
