How the quiz works

You get 12 short scenarios — a windy bridge, a rival who trips you in public, a secret you were never meant to hear — and pick one of four reactions to each. There are no right answers and no trick questions. Every option adds points to one or two of six traits: courage, cunning, loyalty, temper, discipline and independence. Your trait scores, from 0 to 100, are then compared with a profile for each dragon colour, and the closest profile is the dragon that would choose you. You also see your runner-up colour and how close it came.

Some people look for a threshing quiz, others for a Fourth Wing dragon quiz, an Empyrean dragon quiz or a Rebecca Yarros quiz. This page is one fan-made take on that idea, built from scratch. The scenarios are original and reuse no text, characters or named dragons from the books or from any other quiz. Before launch we also ran the scoring on many thousands of random answer sets, so no colour is handed out far more often than the rest.

The six dragon colours

These descriptions are our own, written for this quiz. Red is fierce, fearless and quick to fire: it suits people who walk toward trouble, say the hard thing out loud and would rather be scorched than sidelined.

Green is clever, measured and three moves ahead. It suits planners who read the room, wait for the right moment and win with their head rather than a shove.

Brown is steady, loyal and impossible to shake. It suits the friend who stays, keeps their word and carries others across when it counts.

Orange is wild, independent and unpredictable. It suits free spirits who answer to their own compass and do their best work off the map.

Blue is disciplined, dutiful and precise. It suits people who practise until a move is clean and stay composed while others panic.

Black is bold, strategic and self-reliant. It suits a rare mix of nerve and calculation — someone who is comfortable standing alone and does not wait for permission.

Tail types

Your colour comes from the six traits. Your tail comes from two extra measures that most answers nudge: force (raw power or precision) and guard (protecting others or striking first). Lean clearly toward power and you get a morningstar tail; toward precision, a scorpion tail; toward protecting others, a club tail; toward striking first, a dagger tail. If both measures sit close to the middle, you get a sword tail, the balanced all-rounder. The tail is a second flavour, not a ranking, and no tail beats another.

What Threshing is

In Rebecca Yarros' Empyrean series, Threshing is the day the dragons decide which would-be riders they will bond with. That one-line premise is all this quiz borrows. There are no plot details, characters or quotes here, so it is safe whether you have finished every book or have not opened the first one yet.

Privacy: scored in your browser

Your answers are scored in your browser and never sent to our server. There is no account, no email and no sign-up. Your result lives in its own link, which holds only your final scores, so you can share it or keep it to yourself. Send a friend the challenge link and you can compare your dragons side by side.

FAQ

Is this the official Threshing Day quiz?

No. This is an unofficial fan-made quiz with original questions. It is not connected to the author, the publisher or any official website, and it uses no text or images from the books. Treat it as a bit of fun between readers.

How many dragon colours are there?

This quiz uses six: red, green, brown, orange, blue and black. Each one has a trait profile written for this quiz. You get your closest colour, your runner-up, and one of five tail types: club, dagger, morningstar, scorpion or sword.

Can I retake it?

Yes, as often as you like. Answer honestly instead of aiming for a colour; the scenarios are written so there is no obvious right choice. If you land between two colours, your runner-up shows the other dragon that might have chosen you.

Is it free?

Yes. The threshing day dragon quiz is completely free, with no sign-up and no email. Scoring happens in your browser, and your result page has share images sized for stories, posts and chats.

Does it contain spoilers?

No. The quiz only uses the basic premise that dragons choose their riders. There are no plot points, characters, named dragons or quotes, so it is safe to take before, during or after reading.

How is my tail type decided?

Most answers nudge two extra measures: force versus precision, and protecting others versus striking first. Whichever measure leans further from the middle sets your tail. If both stay close to the middle, you get the balanced sword tail.
