How the pony name generator works

Pony names in the show follow a simple pattern: two everyday words that say something about the pony, usually a colour, a sweet, a sound or a bit of weather, joined to a word that hints at their special talent. This generator copies the pattern, not the names. Your three picks build a pool of twelve first words (six from your coat colour, six from your pony race) and six second words from your talent, and your name decides which ones come out on top.

If you type a first name, we look for first words that share its initial, so Sam might get Sunbeam Stitch and Lily might get Lilac Lullaby. If no word matches, you still get a pony; it just will not alliterate. The result is deterministic: the same name and the same three picks always give the same pony, so you can find it again later or check that a friend really got what they said they got.

The six pony races

Pegasus ponies have wings and love the sky. Unicorns have a horn for magic and tend to be planners. Earth ponies are strong, steady and close to the land. Bat ponies are night owls with leathery wings and sharp ears. Crystal ponies shimmer when they are happy. Sea ponies live by the water with fins instead of hooves. Your free-day pick decides your race, and each race adds its own words to the name pool, so a Bat Pony is more likely to be called Dusk or Velvet and a Sea Pony more likely to be called Coral or Pearl.

These are fan descriptions in our own words. We do not reproduce official character designs, and none of the names in our word lists belong to a main character from the show.

Your mark

A pony's mark is a little symbol for their special talent. Pick baking and you might get three cupcakes in a ring or a rolling pin crossed with a whisk. Music gives notes, harps and bells. Stargazing gives moons and comets, gardening gives clovers and tulips, adventure gives compasses and mountain flags, and design gives buttons, needles and ribbons. Each talent has three original marks, and your name picks one. We describe them in words with a matching emoji rather than copying any official mark.

Ideas for using your pony name

People use pony names for usernames, roleplay and fan-fiction characters, original character (OC) sheets, drawing prompts, party games and pet names. If you are making an OC, the generator gives you a starting kit: a name, a race, a coat and mane colour and a mark. Tap one of the four extra names if the first one does not feel like you; the race, colours and talent stay the same.

Want to know which existing pony you are most like? Take our My Little Pony character quiz: 12 original scenarios match you to one of eight characters with a full reading. The two go well together: generate your own pony, then see which of the main characters it would be friends with.

FAQ

How do I get my pony name?

Type your first name if you like, answer three quick picks (free day, talent, coat colour) and press Generate. You get one main pony name and four alternates in a second.

Will I get the same pony name every time?

Yes. The same name and the same three picks always give the same pony. Change any pick or your name to get a different one.

What pony races can I get?

Six: Pegasus, Unicorn, Earth Pony, Bat Pony, Crystal Pony and Sea Pony. Your free-day pick decides which one.

Does it include a cutie mark?

Yes. Every pony gets an original mark based on its talent, such as a compass with a lightning needle for adventure or two notes and a star for music. They are our own designs, not official marks.

Can I share my pony name?

Yes. Press Share my pony to copy a link (or open your phone's share sheet). The link opens your pony for friends and only contains a short code, never the name you typed.

Is this an official My Little Pony name generator?

No. It is an unofficial fan-made tool, not affiliated with Hasbro. All words, marks and text are original.
