Where the soldier, poet, king idea comes from

The three words come from Soldier, Poet, King, a folk song by the sibling band The Oh Hellos on their 2015 album Dear Wormwood. The song describes three figures who arrive one after another, and listeners have read them as different ways of facing the world: by fighting, by feeling and by ruling.

In 2023 a fan-made online quiz built around the idea went viral on TikTok, and people started sharing whether they were a soldier, a poet or a king. The trend stuck because the three roles are simple, easy to recognise in friends, and flattering in different ways. This Traitprint version is our own quiz with original questions and longer write-ups. It is not affiliated with the band or with any other quiz site.

The three types

The Soldier acts first. Soldiers show love by showing up: they protect their people, keep their word and do the hard, practical job when everyone else is still talking. Their shadow is carrying everything alone and treating rest as weakness.

The Poet feels first. Poets notice what others miss, think in images and meaning, and care about truth and beauty more than rules. Their shadow is drifting, waiting for the perfect mood, and withdrawing when life gets heavy.

The King decides first. Kings see the whole board, take responsibility and organise people towards a goal, whatever their gender. Their shadow is control: struggling to delegate and hiding doubt behind a confident face. None of the three is better than the others; every group needs all of them.

How the scoring works

Each of the 16 questions gives you three answers, one for each archetype, in a shuffled order. Every answer adds one point to its archetype, so each type has exactly 16 chances to score and none is easier to get than another. Your three scores are turned into a percentage split that always adds up to 100.

Your highest score is your main archetype. If your top two scores are exactly tied, you get a blend instead: Soldier-Poet, Poet-King or King-Soldier, each with its own reading. We tested the quiz by scoring many thousands of random answer sets and checked that each main type comes up at a similar rate and that blends stay uncommon, so a blend really does mean you sit right between two roles.

What your result shows

Your result page names your archetype and shows a bar with your full soldier, poet and king split. Below it you get a reading of what the type is like, your strengths, your shadow side, how you tend to love and how you tend to work, plus the kinds of story roles that fit you, described in plain words. You also see your second archetype, because almost everyone has a bit of all three.

You can download a share card for stories or posts, or send a friend a challenge link so they take the same soldier poet king test and you can compare. Nothing to sign up for: the answers are scored in your browser and only your result code goes into the link.

How to read it

Treat your result as a mirror, not a verdict. The quiz asks how you usually react, so it captures your default mode right now, and that can shift with your job, your relationships or simply the year you are having. A Soldier can learn to lead and a King can learn to feel; the reading suggests what to try next.
