What the Enneagram is
The Enneagram is a model of personality that describes nine types, each built around a core motivation: what a person most wants and what they most want to avoid. The types are arranged around a circle, and the lines between them describe how each type tends to change in growth and in stress.
Unlike models that focus mainly on behavior, the Enneagram asks why you do what you do. Two people might both work late every night, one because they want to be successful and the other because they fear letting the team down. The Enneagram treats those as different patterns, even though they look the same from outside.
The nine types are grouped into three triads. The Instinct (or gut) triad of 8, 9 and 1 centers on anger and control. The Feeling (or heart) triad of 2, 3 and 4 centers on image and connection. The Thinking (or head) triad of 5, 6 and 7 centers on fear and security.
How this test works
You rate each statement on a five-point scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The full test has 90 statements, 10 for each type. The quick test uses 36 of them, four per type, for a faster but less precise snapshot.
Each type is scored from 0 to 100 percent based on its statements. Half of each type's statements are reverse-keyed, meaning agreeing with them lowers that type's score. This helps balance out the tendency some people have to agree with everything. Your main type is the one with the highest score.
Your wing is the higher-scoring of the two types next to your main type on the circle. For example, if your main type is 4, your wing is 3 or 5, whichever scored higher. Your triad comes from your main type.
How to read your results
Look at the whole profile, not just the top number. If two or three types are within a few points of each other, the test can't confidently separate them, and the best next step is to read the type pages for each and see which core motivation sounds most like you.
Retaking the test on a different day, or switching from the quick version to the full version, can help confirm a result. Answer based on how you have usually been across your adult life rather than how you feel this week or how you'd like to be.
Wings add flavor to your main type rather than replacing it. A 9w8 and a 9w1 share the same core motivation but express it differently, so reading about both wings can make your result feel more precise.
Accuracy and limits
This is a self-report questionnaire, so it can only reflect how you see yourself. Many people find Enneagram language helpful for reflection, but the model has limited scientific research behind it compared with frameworks like the Big Five. Treat your result as a starting point for self-understanding, not a final verdict.
The test is not a clinical or diagnostic tool and can't tell you anything about mental health. It also shouldn't be used to make hiring decisions or to box people in. Everyone has a mix of traits from many types; the main type simply describes the pattern that tends to show up most.
FAQ
Is the Enneagram test free?
Yes. Both the full 90-statement test and the 36-statement quick test are completely free, with no sign-up required. You see your full results, including scores for all nine types, your main type, your wing and your triad, as soon as you finish.
How long does the test take?
The full test usually takes 8 to 10 minutes. The quick test takes about four minutes. Try not to overthink each statement, since your first honest reaction usually gives the most useful answer.
Should I take the quick test or the full test?
The quick test is good for a first look or when you're short on time. The full test uses more than twice as many statements per type, so its scores are steadier and better at separating close types. If your quick result shows a near-tie, take the full version.
What is a wing?
A wing is one of the two types next to your main type on the Enneagram circle. It colors how your main type shows up. On this test, your wing is whichever neighboring type scored higher. For example, a Type 1 has either a 9 wing or a 2 wing, written 1w9 or 1w2.
Can my Enneagram type change?
Most Enneagram teachers say your core type stays the same through life, while your behavior can shift a lot with growth, stress and circumstances. In practice, test results can vary between attempts, especially if scores are close. That usually reflects mood or self-perception rather than a real change of type.
Which Enneagram type is the rarest?
You'll often see Fours, Fives or Eights described as rare, but reliable data is limited. Published percentages come from people who choose to take online tests, which isn't a representative sample of the population, so no one can say with confidence which type is truly the rarest.
