Psychopath Test (Free, Not a Diagnosis)

This free psychopath test estimates how strongly you show everyday psychopathic traits, such as boldness, impulsivity, and cooler reactions to other people's distress, on a 0 to 100% spectrum as part of a three-trait Dark Triad profile. It is not a diagnosis. Psychopath is an informal label; the related clinical term is antisocial personality disorder, which only a licensed professional can diagnose.

What this psychopath test actually measures

Most people who search for a psychopath test want to know one of two things: whether a trait they notice in themselves is unusual, or whether someone else's behavior fits a pattern. This quiz can help with the first question in a limited way. It scores a personality dimension researchers call psychopathy, which covers fearlessness, thrill-seeking, acting before thinking, and a thinner emotional response to someone else's pain.

Because the quiz is built on the Dark Triad model, you also get scores for narcissism and Machiavellianism. Seeing the three together is often more informative than one number, since a high psychopathy score paired with low strategic planning reads very differently from the same score paired with high planning.

Psychopath vs sociopath: how the words are used

In everyday speech, people often say a psychopath is born that way and comes across as cold, calm, and calculating, while a sociopath is shaped mainly by a harsh environment and comes across as hot-headed and erratic. That distinction is popular usage rather than settled science. Researchers disagree about where the line falls, and many avoid both words in favor of describing specific traits.

Neither word is a current diagnosis. When clinicians assess a lasting pattern of disregard for other people's rights, the formal label they consider is antisocial personality disorder.

How scoring works

You respond to 27 original statements, nine for each trait, on an agree to disagree scale. A few statements are worded in the opposite direction, so agreeing with them lowers the score, which keeps a habit of agreeing with everything from inflating your result. Each trait becomes a percentage from 0 to 100.

A middle score means your answers sat near the center of the possible range. It does not compare you with a clinical population, and because the items are written for this site, the numbers are best treated as a rough personal snapshot.

Why an online quiz cannot diagnose anyone

Clinical assessment of psychopathy or antisocial personality disorder relies on structured interviews, a long view of someone's history, records, and the judgment of a trained professional. A self-report quiz sees none of that. It only sees how you chose to answer today, which is shaped by mood, self-image, and how you interpret each sentence.

Self-report also has an obvious blind spot: the traits being measured can affect how honestly people describe themselves. That is one more reason a score here is a starting point for reflection, not a verdict.

If you are worried about yourself or someone else

If a pattern of harming others, breaking rules, or feeling detached is causing real trouble, a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist can offer a proper assessment and practical support. If anyone is in danger right now, contact local emergency services.

In the US, you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for mental-health crisis support, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 1-800-799-7233 if you feel unsafe with a partner or family member.

FAQ

Can an online test tell if I'm a psychopath?

No. An online quiz can only estimate how you rate yourself on a personality trait. Deciding whether someone meets criteria for antisocial personality disorder takes a licensed professional, an in-depth interview, and a look at long-term history. Treat this result as a prompt to reflect, not as a label.

What's the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath?

Popularly, psychopath suggests someone born with a cold, controlled temperament, and sociopath suggests someone whose antisocial behavior grew mostly out of their upbringing and shows up as impulsive. Researchers have not settled this split, and neither term is an official diagnosis today.

What if I score high on psychopathy?

A high score means you described yourself as bolder, more impulsive, or less shaken by others' distress than average. Those tendencies can help in high-pressure work and can also strain relationships. If the result worries you, or matches real problems in your life, talking it through with a therapist is a sensible next step.

How do I know if my partner is a psychopath?

A quiz cannot tell you. Pay attention to behavior instead: repeated lying, intimidation, controlling money or contacts, or disregard for your safety. Your safety matters more than a label. A counselor or the National Domestic Violence Hotline can help you think through options, and emergency services are there if you are in danger.

Is this psychopath test free?

Yes. The full quiz and all three trait scores are free, with no sign-up and no paywall. It takes about five minutes to complete.

Is a low psychopathy score a good thing?

Not automatically. Very low scorers can be cautious and highly sensitive to others, which is caring but can also mean avoiding healthy risks or struggling to stay calm in a crisis. Every level on the spectrum has trade-offs.
