Sociopath Test (Free, Not a Diagnosis)

This free sociopath test estimates everyday antisocial-leaning traits, like rule-bending, impulsive choices, and low guilt after hurting someone, on a 0 to 100% spectrum within a three-trait Dark Triad profile. It is not a diagnosis. Sociopath is an informal word rather than a medical term; the clinical condition is antisocial personality disorder, and only a licensed professional can diagnose it.

What this sociopath test looks at

There is no official sociopathy scale, so this quiz approaches the question through the psychopathy trait in the Dark Triad model, which overlaps heavily with what people mean by sociopathic. It asks how you tend to handle rules, risk, temptation, and other people's feelings, then turns your answers into a percentage.

You will also see where you land on narcissism and Machiavellianism. Those two scores add context: someone who acts on impulse but has little interest in scheming is in a different place from someone who plans carefully and feels little remorse.

Sociopath vs psychopath in everyday language

A common way people separate the two words is that a sociopath is made, mostly by a chaotic or harmful environment, and tends to be volatile, reactive, and capable of some attachments, while a psychopath is born that way and tends to be cooler and more calculating. This is a widespread rule of thumb, not an established scientific finding.

Clinicians generally do not diagnose either one. The formal category they use for a persistent pattern of violating other people's rights is antisocial personality disorder.

How your score is calculated

The quiz has 27 statements written for this site, nine per trait. You rate each one from disagree to agree. Some are reverse-worded, so agreeing pulls the score down instead of up, which helps balance out a tendency to agree with everything. Each trait is reported from 0 to 100%.

Fifty percent is roughly the midpoint of the possible range, not an average of any measured group. Compare your three scores with each other rather than reading any one of them as a fixed fact about you.

Why no website can diagnose sociopathy

A real assessment for antisocial personality disorder involves a professional interview, a detailed life history that usually reaches back to adolescence, and often information from other sources. Professionals may also use structured clinical interviews designed for this purpose. A five-minute self-rating cannot replace any of that.

Your answers can also swing with a bad week, a recent argument, or how you want to see yourself. A result here is useful for curiosity and self-reflection, and that is where its usefulness stops.

Getting support

If you are concerned about your own behavior, or about someone who repeatedly lies, threatens, or exploits people around them, a licensed mental-health professional can help. If anyone is in danger, contact local emergency services right away.

In the US, call or text 988 for mental-health crisis support. If you are dealing with abuse from a partner, the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 offers confidential help and safety planning.

FAQ

Can an online test tell if I'm a sociopath?

No. It can estimate how you describe your own traits, but it cannot diagnose anything. Antisocial personality disorder is assessed by a licensed professional using interviews and long-term history. If the question matters to you, that conversation is the reliable route, and this quiz is only a starting point.

What's the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath?

In casual use, sociopath tends to mean someone shaped by their environment who acts impulsively, and psychopath tends to mean someone with an inborn, colder style. Experts debate this, and neither word appears as a diagnosis in current manuals.

What does a high score on this sociopath test mean?

It means your answers leaned toward risk-taking, impatience with rules, or feeling less guilt than most people describe. It does not mean you have a disorder. If the result echoes problems at home, at work, or with the law, a therapist can help you understand the pattern and change it.

How do I know if my partner is a sociopath?

Focus on what they do, not on a label. Ongoing lies, threats, isolating you from friends, or putting you at risk are serious whatever the cause. Talk to a counselor or call the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and contact emergency services if you are in immediate danger.

Can someone with sociopathic traits change?

Traits like impulsivity and risk-seeking often soften with age, and behavior can change with consistent support, clear consequences, and therapy. Change tends to be slower when the person sees no problem, which is one reason professional help matters.

Is this sociopath test free?

Yes. The whole quiz and all of your scores are free, with no account, email, or payment required.
